A note from Mr. Kominowski....

Dear York families,
Starting October 14, 2026, Middlebury Community Schools will be using ParentSquare Attendance Plus to strengthen how we support student attendance. This means you may hear from us more with messages about your student’s attendance, including:
  • Celebration messages about attendance milestones and improvements
  • Check-ins when your student is absent more frequently
  • Digital attendance letters through ParentSquare when certain absence levels are reached, instead of paper letters sent by mail
You’ll receive these attendance-related communications the same way you receive other Middlebury Community School updates and notifications through ParentSquare.
For more information about how to use ParentSquare for attendance, here are some helpful resources for your reference:
If you have questions about your student's attendance, please contact York Elementary at 574-825-5312
Thank you for being our partner in supporting your student’s attendance!
Sincerely,
Joe Kominowski
Principal
York Elementary School

Parent Teacher Conferences

Parent Teacher Conferences will be held on Monday, October 19th and Tuesday, October 20th from 3 - 7:30. Report cards will be sent home on Monday, October 19th. They will also be available online through PowerSchool. This year conference time sign-ups were sent out to families on Friday, September 25th through ParentSquare.

Picture Retake Day

Picture retakes will be held on Wednesday, October 28th. We will be taking photos of students that were absent on original picture day as well as those wanting to retake their original pictures. Those wanting to have their child's photo retaken MUST CONTACT your child's teacher or the office so that we can make sure the photo is done. If you had ordered photos and would like retakes, you will need to return the photo package with your student on the 28th. We will not be able to retake the photo without the original order. If you did not order photos, then there is nothing that needs to be returned with your child.

Nurse's Notes

  • As the weather changes, please remember to dress your child appropriately. It is very helpful to label your child's coats, hat, and gloves so that we are able to locate the owner of the items if they are lost.
  • When your child is ill or has an appointment, please remember to call the school office at 574-825-5312 to report the absences or notify if there will be a late arrival or early dismissal.
  • We would encourage you to supply an extra set of clothing in your child's backpack for those times it may be needed.

PTO News

Thank you to everyone who came out and joined us for Mustang Night! We had a great turn out and a lot of fun. We also want to thank all of our volunteers and donors that help made the night a success.

Upcoming Events....
Our Scholastic Book Fair will be held from October 19 - 20. Students will visit the bookfair at an assigned time during the day with their class and create wish lists. The book fair will only be open for shopping during Parent Teacher Conferences. Please note that conference times (M & T from 3:30-7:00) will be the only time students are allowed to purchase books.

Our next meeting is October 14th and we welcome everyone. We always love seeing new faces as we continue to plan exciting things for the year.

Counselor Corner

As the school counselor, my goal is to provide students with the skills and knowledge they need to be successful in school, in the community, and as lifelong learners.

During the month of October, classroom lessons will focus on the Zones of Regulation and Bullying Prevention. In November, lessons will focus on Body Safety.
You will be receiving opt-out letters in the upcoming weeks. These forms only need to be completed and returned by October 14th if you do not want your child to participate in the Body Safety lesson.
For both the Bullying and Body Safety lessons, I will be using the Monique Burr Foundation curriculum.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out at any time throughout the year if you have questions.

Habits of Scholarship

We are so proud of the number of students that are receiving Habit of Scholarship awards. Staff at York are always looking for students that demonstrate integrity, respect, responsibility, and grit. If your child is awarded one of these, you can send in their blue York shirt and the habit will be applied to the back. (see photo) Make sure you send the shirt in a bag labeled with the child's name, teacher name, and habit that was awarded. We love seeing our York students practicing these habits!
